Este artículo acerca al lector a la lengua y cultura q’anjob’ales desde un punto de vista descriptivo teniendo en cuenta los aspectos más sobresalientes de esta lengua maya. En primer lugar, se ofrece una aproximación etnolingüística a los orígenes de este grupo mesoamericano. Seguidamente se analizan aspectos lingüísticos destacados como la ortografía y pronunciación, la importancia gramatical de los clasificadores y marcadores de la ergatividad, así como de las partículas de negación. Por último, se examina la expresión de género en q’anjob’al y algunas variaciones encontradas en el dialecto de Santa Eulalia. El objetivo principal reside en proporcionar un panorama general sobre el q’anjob’al y las investigaciones pertinentes.
This paper presents an overview of the Q’anjob’al language and culture from a descriptive perspective, attempting to highlight the most unique linguistic patterns found in this Mayan language. First, special attention is given to areas related to the ethnolinguistics origins of this indigenous Mesoamerican group. Secondly, we analyze linguistic aspects related to orthography, pronunciation and grammar features including classifiers, ergative markers and negative particles.
Finally, we describe how grammatical gender is expressed in q’anjob’al in addition to dialectal variations from Santa Eulalia. Our goal is to be as thematically inclusive as possible to give the reader a general overview of research into the Q’anjob’al language.
