La constitución de la fonética como disciplina surge en el ámbito hispánico avanzada la segunda mitad del siglo XIX desde distintas áreas de interés. La terminología que se va forjando para referirse a los sonidos de las lenguas es fundamental para estudiar el desarrollo de la reflexión sobre el plano fónico del lenguaje. En este trabajo nos centramos en el periodo que abarca desde las primeras menciones de los términos sustantivos fonética y fonología y sus derivados adjetivos hasta la primera edición del Manual de pronunciación española de Tomás Navarro Tomás (1918). Los objetivos son registrar las formas preferidas en cada momento y determinar las designaciones que se les aplican, referidas bien al plano fónico, bien a la disciplina. Nos serviremos de la prensa histórica, así como de determinadas monografías sobre la lengua española que contribuyeron a la fijación progresiva de los términos.
The constitution of phonetics as a discipline emerged in the Hispanic world during the second half of the 19th century from different areas of interest. The terminology that is being forged referring to the sounds of languages is fundamental for studying the development of reflection on the phonetic level of language. In this work we focus on the period between the first mentions of fonética and fonología nouns and their adjective derivatives and the first edition of the Tomás Navarro Tomás’ Manual de pronunciación española (1918). The aims are to record the preferred forms at any stage and to determine the designations applied to them, either related to the phonetic level or to the discipline. I use the historical press as well as certain monographs on the Spanish language which contributed to the progressive setting of terms.
