El objetivo principal de este trabajo es ofrecer una revisión ordenada del pensamiento del escritor y «divine» inglés Richard Montagu sobre la doctrina de la salvde la Inglaterra de la primera mitad del siglo xvii, atendiendo especialmente a las tensiones entre la monarquía y el Parlamento reflejadas en el conflicto entre ar-minianos y puritanos en Inglaterra. Para ello dividiremos el trabajo en tres partes. En la primera presentaremos algunas premisas fundamentales para contextualizar el pensamiento de Montagu, en la segunda ofreceremos unas pinceladas sobre la vida y obra del divine, y en la tercera trataremos de exponer sintéticamente las cuestiones más relevantes sobre la redención, la libertad humana y el papel de la gracia santificante en la obra. En las conclusiones recogeremos sintéticamente los puntos principales de la doctrina de Montagu sobre la cuestión de cara a un futuración en su primera obra destacada A Gagg for the New Gospell. El objetivo secundario es contextualizar esta doctrina en el panorama social y político
The primary aim of this paper is to provide an orderly review of the English writer and divine Richard Montagu’s thinking on the doctrine of salvation in his first major work, A Gagg for the New Gospell. The secondary aim is to con-textualise this doctrine in the social and political landscape of England in the first half of the seventeenth century, paying particular attention to the tensions between monarchy and Parliament as reflected in the conflict between Arminians and Pu-ritans in England. To this end, the paper will be divided into three parts. In the first we will present some fundamental premises to contextualise Montagu’s thought, in the second we will offer a brief outline of the divine’s life and work, and in the third we will try to synthetically expose the most relevant questions about redemption, human freedom and the role of sanctifying grace in the work. In conclusion we will summarise the main points of Montagu’s doctrine on the question for a uture work in which we will continue to develop this analysis in the rest of his work
