La producción, circulación y lectura de los periódicos en el virreinato del Perú entre los años 1811 y 1820 es el tema de estudio de este ensayo. Durante aquellos años, el virreinato del Perú en general, y Lima en particular, se vieron inundados de gran cantidad de publicaciones periódicas extranjeras y locales. Este proceso constituye una excepcional ventana para apreciar la importancia de la cultura impresa en un contexto colonial. Desde el punto de vista metológico, este estudio aplica el llamado “circuito de comunicación”, propuesto del historiador norteamericano Robert Darnton. Se trata de una propuesta propia de la historia del libro, que permite entender a los impresos y sus lectores en sus contextos históricos.
The production, circulation and reading of newspapers between the years 1811 and 1820 in the viceroyalty of Peru is the subject of study of this essay. During those years, the viceroyalty of Peru in general, and Lima in particular, were inundated with a large number of foreign and local periodical publications. This process constitutes an exceptional window to appreciate the importance of print culture in a colonial context. From a methodological point of view, this study applies the so-called “communication circuit”, proposed by the American historian Robert Darnton. This is a proposal specific to the history of the book, which allows us to understand printed matter and its readers in their historical contexts.
