En el conjunto de ensayos que escribió durante su exilio en Fuerteventura y París titulado Alrededor del estilo (1924), Unamuno plantea la pregunta ¿qué es estilo?, a la que responde, que el estilo es el hombre, la persona. En este artículo presentaremos las líneas principales de la teoría unamuniana acerca de la persona: la distinción entre el individuo humano y la persona humana, su creacionismo voluntarista de fondo como explicación de la esencia y existencia de la persona, la dimensión siempre social de la vida personal, la importancia de las obras a la hora de formar la personalidad y la posición crítica que, desde este personalismo, le permite a Unamuno ir a la contra de las corrientes histórico-materialistas de su época, del anarquismo así como del comunismo, del individualismo así como del totalitarismo.
In the collection of essays he wrote during his exile in Fuerteventura and Paris entitled Alrededor del estilo (1924), Unamuno poses the question «What is style? To which he answers that style is the man, the person. In this article we will present the main lines of Unamuno’s theory about the person: the distinction between the human individual and the human person, his fundamental voluntarist creationism as an explanation of the essence and existence of the latter, the always social dimension of personal life, the importance of works in forming the personality and the critical position that, from this personalism, allows Unamuno to go against the historical-materialist currents of his time, anarchism as well as communism, individualism as well as totalitarianism.
