• THIS AMBITIOUS AND WELL-DOCUMENTED study focuses on the wealth and variety of traces left by Spanish mysticism in handbooks on mental prayer, poetry, spiritual autobiography, plays, and inquisitorial reports written in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. It also considers the possible impact of Nahua culture on the metaphorical writing of Spanish Franciscans at the time of the early evangelization of America.
