Este artículo surgió de una invitación que me hizo el profesor Víctor Pérez Vera, en 2024, para que hablara en su cátedra UNESCO sobre “La universidad pública en el siglo XXI”. Contiene, por lo tanto, el artículo, una caracterización del pensamiento de Bello en general y del “Discurso de instalación de la Universidad de Chile” en particular. Respecto de lo primero, fija las influencias de Bello, la ilustración católica, el utilitarismo benthamiano, el empirismo inglés y escocés, el eclecticismo cousiniano y, al parecer a través de este, la huella de Kant, así como las características principales de su proyecto de unidad cultural para Chile e Hispanoamérica. Y, en cuanto a la interpretación de sus palabras en el “Discurso…”, sostengo que ellas, como las de Kant en su folleto sobre la Ilustración y en “El conflicto de facultades” (y sin sostener por eso una influencia directa) revelan un liberalismo moderado, que defiende la autonomía universitaria, pero intentando compatibilizarla con las convicciones del poder conservador.
This article arose from an invitation that Professor Víctor Pérez Vera extended to me, in 2024, to speak about “The Public University in The 21st Century” at his UNESCO seminar. The article therefore contains a characterization of Bello’s beliefs in general and of his “Speech on The Foundation of The University of Chile” in particular. Regarding these beliefs, it establishes the influences of Bello, the Catholic Enlightenment, Benthamian utilitarianism, English and Scottish empiricism, Cousinian eclecticism and, apparently through the latter, the imprint of Kant, as well as the main characteristics of Bello’s initiative for cultural unity for Chile and Hispanic America. And, as for the interpretation of his words in the “Speech...”, I believe that they, like those of Kant in his pamphlet on the Enlightenment and in “The Conflict of Faculties” (and without necessarily maintaining a direct influence) reveal a moderate liberalism, which defends university autonomy, while attempting to make it compatible with the convictions of conservative power
