La Peregrinación de Bartolomé Lorenzo [1586] es un texto escrito por el sacerdote jesuita José de Acosta cuya clasificación ha estado en duda por la crítica respecto a si es una novela o bien una biografía. Sin desconocer las características ficcionales que presenta el texto, el presente artículo propone que la obra corresponde a la actualización de la peregrinatio y la hagiografía, ambos géneros escriturales medievales. Entendemos esta actualización como una estrategia de José de Acosta para situar a la reciente Compañía de Jesús en la tradición, a la vez que constituye un escrito propagandístico para el proceso misional en América.
The Peregrinación of Bartolomé Lorenzo [1586] is a written by the Jesuit priest José de Acosta whose classification has been questioned by critics regarding whether it is a novel or a biography. Without ignoring the fictional characteristics that the text presents, this paper proposes that the work corresponds to the modernization of the peregrinatio and the hagiography, both medieval writing genres. We understand this modernization as a strategy by José de Acosta to place the recent Society of Jesus in the ecclesiastical tradition, at the same time as it constitutes a propaganda for the missionary process in America.
