En el marco de la sociolingüística histórica y el estudio de las denominadas relativas oblicuas, el presente artículo persigue dos objetivos. Por un lado, se analiza la difusión de las variantes novedosas (prep + art + que), frente a las tradicionales (prep + que), en textos españoles representativos de dos polos diferentes del eje concepcional entre la inmediatez (correspondencia privada) y la distancia comunicativa (textos literarios y jurídico-administrativos) de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Por otro lado, se compara el condicionamiento de la variación en ese periodo respecto a los momentos iniciales del cambio en el siglo XVIII, y se examina el modo en que distintos factores lingüísticos y extralingüísticos pudieron afectar a cada extremo del eje textual. Los resultados del estudio revelan diferencias entre las dos etapas, al tiempo que muestran cómo ese condicionamiento fue más congruente en las fases más avanzadas (siglo XX) que en las preliminares (siglo XVIII), momento este último en el que se adivinan algunas divergencias significativas entre la inmediatez y la distancia comunicativa.
Within the framework of historical sociolinguistics and the study of prepositional relative clauses, the present study has two objec-tives. On the one hand, to analyse the diffusion of the novel vari-ants (prep + art + que), as opposed to the traditional ones (prep + que), in texts representing two different poles of immediacy (private correspondence) and communicative distance (legal-administrative and literary texts), written during the first half of the 20th century. On the other hand, to compare the conditioning of the variation in this period with the initial phases of change in the eighteenth century and the way in which this can affect each end of the discursive axis. The results of the study confirm these differences between the two stages studied, but at the same time show that this conditioning was much more congruent in the advanced stages than in the preliminary ones, where some divergences between immediacy and communicative distance were particularly visible.
