Este ensayo navega el Archivo Courret digital de la Biblioteca Nacional del Perú. El ensayo reflexiona sobre una serie de fotografías en las que mujeres afroperuanas aparecen retratadas con niños pequeños en brazos, sosteniéndolos, o sentadas junto a estos. En el archivo digital, estas mujeres, que supuestamente trabajaron como nodrizas o niñeras en Lima hacia finales del siglo XIX y las primeras décadas del XX, permanecen sin nombre o nombradas homogéneamente por su ocupación doméstica. Este ensayo se pregunta sobre la proyección de estructuras repetidas de ocultamiento en el archivo digital, interrogando las formas en que éstas nos hablan a los espectadores sobre prácticas de cuidado (racializadas) que permanecen ocultas. Al situar estas fotos en sus contextos de producción y reproducción digital, el ensayo argumenta, en primer lugar, que las fotos son la cara visual de la consolidación de un gobierno oligárquico muy contradictorio, que sostenía el proyecto político de la llamada República Aristocrática. En segundo lugar, propone que en el Archivo Courret digital, la maternidad negra se visualiza como fundamento y amenaza a la vez, aunque en última instancia llega al espectador contemporáneo como un rastro de “abundancia,” lo que Elizabeth Edwards define como la fuerza afectiva que emerge de la presencia de un sujeto en una fotografía (Citation2015).
This essay navigates the digital Courret Archive housed at the Biblioteca Nacional del Perú. The essay reflects on a series of photographs in which Afro-Peruvian women are depicted holding or sat next to young children. In the digital archive, these women, who presumably worked as wet nurses or nannies in Lima towards the end of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth, remain either unnamed or named homogenously by their domestic occupation. The essay asks about the screening of repeated structures of hiding in the digital archive, interrogating the ways by which these speak to us viewers about concealed forms of (racialized) care. By placing these photos in their contexts of production and digital reproduction, the essay argues, first, that the photos are the visual face of the consolidation of a very contradictory oligarchic government, which sustained the political project of the so-called República Aristocrática. Secondly, it proposes that in the digital Courret Archive, the Black maternal is visualized as both foundation and threat, yet it ultimately reaches the contemporary viewer as a trace of “abundance,” what Elizabeth Edward’s defines as the affective force that emerges from a subject’s presence in a photograph (Citation2015).
