El diario de Margarita Caro (Bogotá, 1848-1925) ha sido publicado en Bogotá, en 1942 (editorial Antena) y en 1953 (editorial del Instituto Caro y Cuervo), como parte del libro Los Caros en Colombia, cuya edición estuvo bajo la coordinación de su hija Margarita Holguín y Caro. El archivo de la familia Holguín y Caro fue donado al Instituto Caro y Cuervo (Bogotá) en 1966 y se encuentra en la biblioteca de esta institución. Recientemente, hallé en este archivo la versión mecanografiada del diario. Al comparar este dactiloscrito con las dos versiones editadas del diario, identifiqué numerosas diferencias que incluyen elisión de información y de entradas completas del diario mecanografiado, adición y cambio de información en algunas entradas y cambios de fechas en otras. El objetivo de este artículo es analizar estas diferencias y comprender la mediación editorial realizada por Margarita Holguín en el diario de su madre (orientada por el cuidado de la imagen de su familia), así como la función que cumplió este diario en un trayecto de la vida de Margarita Caro, en el marco del siglo XIX colombiano.
The diary of Margarita Caro (Bogotá, 1848-1925) was published in Bogotá in 1942 (Antena publishing house) and in 1953 (Instituto Caro y Cuervo publishing house), as part of the book Los Caros in Colombia, edited by her daughter Margarita Holguín y Caro. The archive of the Holguín y Caro family was donated to the Instituto Caro y Cuervo (Bogotá) in 1966 and is in the library of this institution. Recently, the typewritten version of the diary in this archive was found. When comparing this typewritten version with the two edited versions of the diary, numerous differences identified, included the omission of information and of complete entries from the typewritten diary, the addition and change of information in some entries, and changes of dates in others. This article aims to analyze these differences and understand the editorial mediation carried out by Margarita Holguín in her mother’s diary (guided by the care of her family’s image), as well as the role that this diary played in the life of Margarita Caro, within the framework of the 19th century in Colombia
