En el imaginario colectivo humano, pocas criaturas cuentan con el suficiente carisma como para atravesar todo tipo de fronteras espacio-temporales: tal distinción revela el que semejan-tes seres aludan a intereses y preocupaciones innatos e intrínsecamente humanos. Una de las escasas figuras míticas meritorias de semejante galardón son las sirenas, tentadores monstruos femeninos que manipulan a sus encendidas víctimas a apagarse en las aguas. Siguiendo tal línea y en primer lugar, el siguiente estudio tratará los orígenes culturales y antropológicos del mito de la tentadora. A continuación, se brindarán posibles explicaciones detrás tanto de la circunscripción de esta creencia a entornos acuáticos. Por último, se procederá a exponer dos exhaustivos análisis de Literatura Comparada sobre el tema: uno en el que se desgranen las diversas expresiones del mito de la sirena en las diferentes regiones del mundo, y otro que recoja el empleo, tratamiento y recurrencia de las mismas sirenas a lo largo de la Historia cul-tural en notables manifestaciones artísticas y/o de la cultura popular.
In the collective human imagination, few creatures possess enough charisma to transcend all kinds of space-time boundaries: such a distinction reveals that these beings appeal to innate and intrinsically human interests and concerns. One of the rare mythical figures worthy of such a distinction is the mermaid, a seductive female monster that lures its enraptured victims to extinguish themselves in the waters. Following this line of thought, the present study will first address the cultural and anthropological origins of the myth of the temptress. Subse-quently, it will offer possible explanations behind the association of this belief with aquatic environments. Finally, it will present two comprehensive Comparative Literature analyses on the subject: one dissecting the diverse expressions of the mermaid myth across different re-gions of the world, and another examining the use, treatment, and recurrence of mermaids throughout cultural history in notable artistic and/or popular culture manifestations
