La metáfora es un recurso literario que traslada el significado literal de una palabra a uno figurado, reflejando así cómo entendemos el mundo. Este estudio se enfoca en analizar la me-táfora en el lenguaje de los marineros para entender cómo los términos cotidianos adquieren significados ampliados en su contexto profesional. Utilizando de base el Diccionario Marítimo Español de Timoteo O’Scanlan (1831), se investigará cómo la pragmática y la metáfora influyen en la expansión del significado de palabras en el léxico marítimo. Primero se abordará la teoría sobre la adquisición del lenguaje y la pragmática, y luego se analizará el uso metafórico en el vocabulario de los marineros.
Metaphor is a literary device that translates the literal meaning of a word into a figurative one, thus reflecting how we understand the world. This study focuses on analysing metaphor in the language of seafarers to understand how everyday terms acquire expanded meanings in their professional context. Using Timoteo O’Scanlan’s Spanish Maritime Dictionary (1831) as a basis, it will investigate how pragmatics and metaphor influence the expansion of the meaning of words in the maritime lexicon. First, the theory of language acquisition and pragmatics will be addressed, and then metaphorical usage in the vocabulary of seafarers will be analysed.
