A finales del siglo XIX, célebres escritores españoles relacionados con el naturalismo, como Emilia Pardo Bazán y Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, cultivaron el cuento para describir costumbres, tipos y entornos de su región, Galicia y Valencia. En ambos autores el mar emerge como un elemento significativo en sus relatos, ejerciendo una influencia inevitable en la vida de los ha-bitantes costeros y los marineros que desarrollan sus vidas en las barcas. El objetivo de este trabajo es el análisis de una selección de cuentos de los dos autores atendiendo principalmente a la relación entre el hombre y el mar. Se examinará la forma de describir el ambiente marino de los dos escritores desde la mirada naturalista y cómo el mar influye en el carácter de los personajes y sus destinos. Además, se comparará el papel del mar en sus relatos, ya que le otorgan distintas significaciones debido a su diferente ideología. A través del análisis, se evi-dencia la influencia del naturalismo en ambos autores, pues tanto el mar gallego como el va-lenciano pueden presentarse como fuerzas implacables y destructivas. No obstante, en ciertos momentos, el mar gallego asume un rol maternal, nutriendo y abrigando a los personajes, mientras que el mar valenciano se convierte en un aliado eficaz de las clases bajas, apoyando sus luchas y aspiraciones.
At the end of the 19th century, renowned Spanish writers associated with naturalism, such as Emilia Pardo Bazán and Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, used short stories to depict the customs, char-acters, and environments of their regions, Galicia and Valencia. In both authors, the sea emerges as a significant element in their narratives, exerting an inevitable influence on the lives of coastal inhabitants and sailors who spend their lives in boats. The objective of this study is to analyze a selection of short stories from these two authors, focusing mainly on the relationship between man and the sea. The study will examine how both writers describe the marine environment from a naturalist perspective and how the sea influences the characters’ personalities and destinies. Additionally, the role of the sea in their stories will be compared, as they assign different meanings to it due to their different ideology. Through this analysis, the influence of naturalism on both authors becomes evident, as the Galician and Valencian seas can be portrayed as relentless and destructive forces. However, at certain moments, the Galician sea takes on a maternal role, nurturing and sheltering the characters, while the Va-lencian sea becomes an effective ally of the lower classes, supporting their struggles and aspi-rations.
