Este artículo explora la representación de los lobos marinos en la literatura periodística espa-ñola del siglo XIX. Nuestra indagación, enmarcada en el ámbito de lo que el autor denomina ‘estudios de animales acuáticos’, pretende arrojar luz sobre la relación del ser humano con estas criaturas en la historia de España. Será puesto de relieve, por tanto, el carácter de nuestros encuentros a través de numerosas noticias de avistamientos en las costas; se revelará también el destino de las focas domesticadas, obligadas a actuar en espectáculos vergonzosos; glosare-mos narraciones y leyendas urbanas de pinnípedos monstruosos; y, finalmente, identificare-mos indicios de una mayor preocupación por la crisis oceánica hacia el término de la centuria.
This article explores the representation of sea lions in 19th century Spanish journalistic litera-tura. Our research, framed within the framework of what the author calls ‘aquatic animal stud-ies’, aims to shed light on the relationship between humans and these creatures in the history of Spain. The nature of our encounters will thus be highlighted through the numerous reports of coastal sightings; the fate of domesticated seals, forced to perform in shameful spectacles, will also be revealed; urban tales and legends of monstrous pinnipeds will be glossed over; and, finally, we will identify signs of a growing concern for the oceanic crisis towards the end of the century.
