El quincuagésimo aniversario en 2023 del golpe de Estado en Chile respaldado por la CIA ha proporcionado un excelente incentivo para reflexionar sobre la Chile Solidarity Campaign en el Reino Unido. Este artículo es el testimonio personal de Carlos Arredondo, músico y cantautor, y activista cultural de dicha campaña en Escocia como miembro de la diáspora chilena en el Reino Unido. Este artículo pretende aportar ideas sobre la preservación de la memoria colectiva, un tema recurrente para millones de sus compatriotas que sufrieron los abusos del régimen de Pinochet durante diecisiete dolorosos años. Basándose en sus experiencias personales, explora la cultura, la identidad y la resistencia de los exiliados chilenos en Escocia y cómo éstas se enriquecieron aún más a través del contacto con la población local. El artículo explora el papel de la música en la Chile Solidarity Campaign en Escocia, en la que participó Carlos activamente, basándose en su vasta colección de material relacionado, incluyendo correspondencia, discos de vinilo, libros, carteles, folletos y artículos de prensa, que le legó la etnomusicóloga Jan Fairley justo antes de su muerte en 2012. También considera el papel y la importancia de los objetos materiales relacionados con la cultura musical en la preservación de la memoria colectiva.
The fiftieth anniversary, in 2023, of the CIA-backed coup d’état in Chile has provided an excellent incentive for reflection on the Chile Solidarity Campaign in the United Kingdom. This article is the personal testimony of Carlos Arredondo, a musician and songwriter, and a cultural activist with that campaign in Scotland as a member of the Chilean diaspora in the UK. He seeks to provide insights into the preservation of collective memory, a recurrent theme for millions of Chileans who suffered the abuses of the Pinochet regime for seventeen long and painful years. Based on his personal experiences, Carlos Arredondo explores the culture, identity and resistance of Chilean exiles in Scotland and how these were enriched further through contact with local people. More specifically, this article explores the important role of music in the Chilean Solidarity Campaign in Scotland, in which he was an active participant, drawing on his vast collection of related material, including correspondence, vinyl records, books, posters, leaflets and newspaper articles, bequeathed to him by the ethnomusicologist Jan Fairley just before her death in 2012. Arredondo thus considers the role and importance of tangible material objects related to musical culture in the preservation of collective memory.
