Los estudios sobre la Historia Social del alto clero urbano poco a poco han ido proliferando dentro de la historiografía española. Sin embargo, aunque el conocimiento del bajo clero también ha avanzado existe una importante carencia respecto al estudio de los monaguillos. Este fue el colectivo más débil de todos los individuos vinculados con el bajo clero urbano moderno. Así, se pretende en el presente artículo comprender mejor las características de este grupo de niños y jóvenes que formaban, en cierto modo, una cantera de sujetos relacionados con las parroquias y que con el tiempo aspiraban a ocupar otras responsabilidades como las sacristías o sochantrías.
Studies on the Social History of the high urban clergy have bit by bit been proliferating within Spanish historiography. However, although knowledge of the lower clergy has also advanced, there is an important lack regarding the study of altar boys. This was the weakest group of all the individuals linked to the modern urban lower clergy. Thus, the aim of this article is to grasp a better understanding of the characteristics of this group of children and young people who formed, in a certain way, a pool of subjects related to the parishes and who over time, aspired to occupy other responsibilities such as sacristies or sochantries.
