En este trabajo se analizará, a partir de abundantes fuentes documentales inéditas, una serie de acciones colectivas de protesta que tuvieron lugar en Vizcaya en el marco de la guerra que enfrentó a la Monarquía Hispánica contra la recién creada República francesa (1793-1795) y que, entre otras cuestiones, buscaban evitar el envío de soldados al frente. Ello llevará a cuestionar la interpretación perpetuada por la historiografía acerca de la popularidad de la contienda y de la naturaleza intrínsecamente contrarrevolucionaria de la población peninsular. Igualmente, mediante el análisis de la resistencia protagonizada por la población, y de los discursos que afloraron en este convulso periodo, será posible aportar una novedosa perspectiva con la que poder reinterpretar el desarrollo —y los límites— del absolutismo reformista y de la constitución provincial vasca durante la crisis del Antiguo Régimen.
Based on abundant unpublished archival records, in this paper we aim to analyse a series of collective protest actions that took place in Biscay (Spanish Basque Country) during the war between the Spanish Monarchy and the newly created French Republic (1793-1795). These actions intended, among other things, to avoid military recruitment against the Revolution. This will lead us to question an interpretation perpetuated by scholars, namely the popularity of this conflict against revolutionary France and the intrinsically counter-revolutionary nature of the peninsular population. Likewise, by analysing the resistance led by the population and the discourses that emerged during this turbulent period, we will be able to provide a new framework for reinterpreting the extent —and the limits— of the so-called Spanish reformist absolutism and the Basque provincial structures at the crisis of the Ancien Régime.
