The aim of this paper is to study the different ways in which the parable of the prodigal son has been adapted in Catalan literature. Between the 16th and the 19th centuries, the story told in the gospel of Saint Luke (15:11–32) has been rewritten in poetic and theatrical works, and its argument has been expanded, always with a moral purpose. In different sections, we analysed from Mallorcan plays in the late 16th century, which are the oldest preserved witnesses of the Catalan literary adaptation of the evangelical parable, to plays from the 19th century, both religious and comical.
