This article evaluates the career and publications of Victor Dixon. For twenty-five years professor of Spanish at Trinity College, Dublin, Dixon is recognized as one of the most influential scholars in his field and of his generation. Dixon’s numerous publications on Spain’s Golden-Age theatre include critical editions and translations of Lope de Vega’s dramas (Fuente Ovejuna, El perro del hortelano among others), articles on Lope, Calderón and Pérez de Montalbán, as well as ground-breaking studies which illuminate the subtleties of characterization and the ingenuity of stagecraft impressively evident in many dramas composed during the seventeenth century in Spain.
