En este artículo examino lo que denomino la “mujer sintética” en las novelas realistas de Benito Pérez Galdós, con el objetivo de poner en evidencia la materialidad del género, algo que se ha pasado por alto en nombre de la performatividad de género. Desde la perspectiva del realismo literario y las teorías de género, mi análisis se centra en la materialidad de unas protagonistas cuya belleza es fabricada de manera sintética. Los personajes en cuestión —Isidora Rufete, Rosalía de Bringas, doña Lupe y Tristana— destacan por algún elemento ornamental indispensable en su autoconfiguración. En última instancia, cuestiono que el género sea meramente performativo, al sugerir que los aspectos materiales de la encarnación femenina revelan que la teoría está raída.
In this article, I examine what I call the “synthetic woman” in Benito Pérez Galdós’s realist novels, with the aim of centering the materiality of gender, something that has been overlooked in the name of gender performativity. Bringing literary realism to bear on theories of gender, I center my analysis on the materiality of protagonists whose beauty is synthetically fabricated. The characters in question—Isidora Rufete, Rosalía de Bringas, Doña Lupe, and Tristana—stand out because of an indispensable ornamental element of their self-fashioning. Ultimately, I question whether gender is merely performative, suggesting that the material aspects of feminine embodiment reveal the theory to be threadbare.
