A partir de la propuesta de Gonzalo Capellán, el artículo analiza cuatro momentos conceptuales de las voces “liberal” y “liberalismo” en Ecuador desde finales del siglo XVIII hasta la década de 1870. Se indaga en las continuidades y rupturas en los usos del concepto, sus nexos con las voces república, democracia, libertad y derechos en medio de las disputas por la hegemonía política y discursiva. El artículo muestra la trayectoria del concepto desde su acepción de tipo moral y sensitivo hasta convertirse en un vocablo que construye identidades, organiza la lucha política, y dota de sentido a las experiencias y expectativas de los sujetos republicanos.
Taking Gonzalo Capellán’s proposal as a starting point, the article analyzes four conceptual moments of the terms “liberal” and “liberalism” in Ecuador from the end of the 18th century to the 1870s. It examines the continuities and changes in the uses of the concept, its links with the key words republic, democracy, freedom and rights in the dispute for political and discursive hegemony. The article shows the trajectory of the concept from its meaning of moral and sensitive type to becoming a word that builds identities, organizes political struggle, and gives sense to the experiences and expectations of the subjects.
