Al poco tiempo de conformarse el Santo Oficio en Lima, un grupo de enemigos de María de Encío —importante mujer que integró el elenco de conquistadores de Chile—tramaron en su contra una denuncia por sospecha de herejía.Tras ello había sentires de enemistad y recelo tanto hacia ella como hacia su marido. El que fuese mujer «mal condicionada y de poco saber» fue lo que empujó a los detractores del matrimonio a denunciarla de diversos cargos, con miras a desacreditar social, política y religiosamente a estamujer como a su familia. El presente estudio tiene por finalidad dar cuenta de los motivos que tuvieron los denunciantes para incoar el proceso y de qué forma la perspicaz María logró desvirtuar los mismos.
Shortly after the Holy Office was established in Lima, a group of enemies of María de Encío—an important woman who formed part of the group of conquerors of Chile—plotted against her by lodging a complaint on suspicion of heresy. Underlying this were feelings of enmity and mistrust towards both her and her husband. The fact that she was regarded as a woman «of bad character and little learning»is what drove her detractors to bring various charges against her, with the aim of discrediting both her and her family socially, politically and religiously. This study aims to set out the reasons that led her accusers to initiate the proceedings and to examine how the astute María managed to refute them.
