La indústria —o protoindústria— gironina d’època moderna va necessitar l’aigua i l’energia hidràulica per fer funcionar els seus aparells i màquines. Per això es va estructurar i va seguir el curs del rec Monar, des de Bescanó, passant per Salt i Santa Eugènia, fins a arribar al Mercadal de Girona. Allà s’hi van instal·lar molins fariners, drapers i paperers, tots lligats a la producció agrí-cola i a la indústria tèxtil de la llana. Més enllà de la sèquia, el riu Galligants i al burg de Sant Pere va acollir adoberies i blanqueries, i al Ter, a la Manola, s’hi van col·locar molins polvorers.
The modern —or protoindustrial— activity in Girona relied on water and hydraulic energy to operate its devices and machinery. As a result, it was organized along the course of the Monar canal, from Bescanó through Salt and Santa Eugènia, until it re-ached the Mercadal district of Girona. Flour mills, fulling mills, and paper mills were established there, all linked to agricultural production and the wool textile industry.
