La construcció, primer, del fort de Montjuïc i, després, de la torre de Sant Joan, proporcionà una important protecció a Girona, tot i que no fou completa. Bona part dels problemes es concentraven en el fet que les citades fortificacions estaven massa a prop de la ciutat i no tenien prou capacitat per controlar els accessos situats al nord de la muntanya de la Barrufa. El setge de l’hivern de 1710/1 ho posà de manifest per la llibertat de moviments de què disposaren els soldats francesos. Acabada la guerra de Successió Espanyola s’encetà un llarg període de pau, en el qual se succeïren els projectes, tot i que no se n’executà cap fins a la Guerra Gran (1793-1795). La construcció de les torres de Sant Narcís, Sant Lluís i Sant Daniel, entre el 1794 i el 1795, foren l’opció escollida, encara que no del tot reeixida. Durant les operacions militars de la guerra del Francès a Girona (1808-1809), les citades torres foren protagonistes durant un curt espai de temps, en els primers mesos del segon setge (maig i juny de 1809). Un cop acabada la guerra, nous planejaments aconsellaren reforçar aquell sector, però cap es portà a terme.
The construction, first of the fort of Mont-juïc and then of the tower of Sant Joan, provided important protection in Girona, although it was not complete. Many of the problems were concentrated in the fact that the fortifications were too close to the city and did not have sufficient capacity to control the accesses located to the north of the Barrufa mountain. The siege of the winter of 1710/1 revealed this for the fre-edom of movement available to French soldiers. After the war of the Spanish Suc-cession, a long period of peace began that allowed a succession of projects, although nothing was executed until the War of the First Coalition (1793-1795). The construc-tion of the towers of Sant Narcís, Sant Lluís and Sant Daniel, between 1794 and 1795, was the chosen option, although not entirely successful. During the military operations of the Napoleonic War in Giro-na (1808-1809), the towers were protago-nists for a short time, in the first months of the second siege (May and June 1809). Once the war was over, new plans advised to reinforce that sector, but he did not exe-cute any work.
