En torno a 1900 las circunstancias sociales y culturales eran ya reconocibles como eso que Calinescu denominó «modernidad histórica», de manera que todas las condiciones estaban dadas para que Uruguay generara su singular «modernidad literaria». La encarnó la Generación del Novecientos, que tuvo como aliento los nuevos aires procedentes de Europa y las propias circunstancias de modernización en su versión hispánica. Un grupo de intelectuales que se inspiraron en el maudit francés, a medio camino entre el bohemio vinculado al anarquismo y el dandi cercano al decadentismo.
Around 1900 the social and cultural conditions were already recognizable as what Calinescu called «historical modernity», so that all the conditions were in placefor Uruguay to generate its unique «literary modernity». It was embodied by the Generation of the Twentieth Century,which was inspired by the new airs coming from Europe and the circumstances of modernization in its Hispanic version.A group of intellectuals who were inspired by the French maudit, halfway between the bohemian linked to anarchism and the dandy close to decadentism.
