The purpose of this article is to examine the historical forms q(u)alquer, quenquer and sequer, and the legitimacy or otherwise of their modern variants, q(u)alquera, quenquera and sequera. Interference from Spanish is identified as the main reason for the decline of the originally prevalent medieval forms and the growing predominance of the latter, particularly in oral speech. The article analyses the different and sometimes contradictory theories regarding ther standardisation, and explores their presence in the border regions between Portugal and Galicia.
Neste contributo são estudadas as formas históricas presentes no título e a (i)legitimidade das hodiernas q(u)alquera, quenquera, sequera, entre outras variantes. A sua crescente predominância só se entende, sob o ponto de vista do autor, tendo em conta a interferência do espanhol, que explicaria a passagem da prática unanimidade medieval à quase exclusividade das formas inovadoras, mormente na oralidade. Passa-se revista aos diferentes postulados normativos a respeito delas, com fundamentos até antagónicos, se bem que diferentes para cada forma. Também se alude à sua presença em zonas fronteiriças portuguesas, fator sempre importante a considerar.
