El presente artículo examina la metáfora del círculo en la obra narrativa de Jorge Luis Borges, atendiendo a sus dimensiones culturales, históricas y filosóficas. Se analizan los significados polisémicos asociados a esta figura: la totalidad, la infinitud, la recurrencia temporal y la perfección geométrica; y se estudia su relación con otras imágenes fundamentales del autor, como la esfera, el laberinto y el espejo. Asimismo, se muestran los vínculos de esta metáfora con diversas tradiciones culturales, desde la concepción cíclica del tiempo en Oriente hasta la especulación metafísica de la Antigüedad clásica. En los relatos borgianos, el círculo no solo aparece como una metáfora evidente de Dios, del universo o del tiempo infinito, sino también como un principio estructural que organiza la narración: se manifiesta en la arquitectura de los espacios, en la geometría de los objetos y en las formas de la escritura. Este trabajo propone que, a través del círculo, Borges articula una poética del retorno que combina destino, repetición y conocimiento.
This article examines the metaphor of the circle in the narrative work of Jorge Luis Borges, focusing on its cultural, historical, and philosophical dimensions. It explores the polysemic meanings associated with this figure: totality, infinity, temporal recurrence, and geometric perfection; and also discusses its connection with other central images in Borges’s poetics, such as the sphere, the labyrinth, and the mirror. This study also traces the cultural backgrounds underlying the metaphor, ranging from Eastern cyclical conceptions of time to the metaphysical speculation of classical antiquity. In Borges’s stories, the circle appears not only as an explicit metaphor for God, the universe, or infinite time, but also as a structural principle that shapes the narrative: it emerges in architecture, in the geometry of objects, and in the symbolic configuration of writing. The article argues that the circle functions as a unifying device through which Borges constructs a poetics of recurrence: intertwining destiny, repetition, and knowledge.
