El presente estudio investiga la formación, evolución y valores diacrónicos de también y tampoco desde sus orígenes en la Edad Media hasta la actualidad. Aunque en español moderno ambas formas desempeñan valores adverbiales y discursivos, también se pueden registrar otros valores en la historia de ambas formas. Mientras estudios anteriores han abordado cualitativamente también y tampoco, el presente trabajo es novedoso porque lo hace desde una perspectiva cuantitativa. Por lo tanto, los objetivos de este estudio son 1) definir los valores semánticos de también y tampoco a lo largo del tiempo, abarcando un período de cuatro siglos, y 2) determinar la frecuencia por valor de uso de también y tampoco con el objetivo de dilucidar el continuo semántico que podría haber dado origen a los valores modernos de ambas formas. Para alcanzar estos objetivos, se realizó un análisis distribucional cuantitativo de las funciones a lo largo del tiempo. Los resultados muestran que ambas formas han experimentado un proceso de subjetivación. Además, un aumento en la frecuencia de las formas en ciertos contextos de uso, unido a una gradual fijación estructural, parecen haber sido fundamentales en el proceso de gramaticalización que ambas formas han seguido a lo largo del tiempo.
The present study addresses the formation, evolution and diachronic values of Spanish también and tampoco from their origins in the Middle Ages up to present days. While in modern Spanish both forms perform adverbial and discursive values, other values may also be registered in the history of the forms. While previous works have qualitatively approached también and tampoco, the present study is novel in that it quantitatively analyzes the evolution of both forms. Thus, the goals of this study are 1) to define the semantic values of también and tampoco over time, encompassing a four-hundred-year period, and 2) to determine the frequency by semantic value of también and tampoco with the ultimate goal of elucidating the semantic continuum that might have given origin to the modern values of both forms. To such aims, a quantitative distributional analysis of functions over time was conducted. Results show that both forms have undergone a process of subjectification. Furthermore, an increase in the frequency of the forms in certain contexts of use, alongside a process of coalescence seem to have been fundamental in the grammaticalization path that both forms have followed over time.
