Los embalses hidroeléctricos transformaron profundamente el paisaje mediterráneo durante el siglo XX, trayendo consigo avances técnicos, pero también fracturas sociales, económicas y culturales en los territorios afectados. Este trabajo analiza el contexto histórico y político que impulsó la construcción de grandes infraestructuras hidráulicas, centrándose en dos casos paradigmáticos: el Lago del Turano en Italia y el Embalse del Tranco en España.
A través de testimonios directos de habitantes de Colle di Tora y otros pueblos del Valle, que recopilé personalmente entre 2020 y 2023 durante el trabajo de campo en el que basé mis estudios sobre la comarca, y de Bujaraiza, recopilados en los estudios mencionados en la bibliografía, se estudian las implicaciones sociales, económicas y culturales derivadas de estas transformaciones. Imágenes y datos acompañan el análisis para ilustrar cómo, bajo las aguas tranquilas de estos lagos artificiales, descansan historias de pérdida y memoria colectiva.
Hydroelectric reservoirs profoundly reshaped the Mediterranean landscape over the course of the twentieth century. They brought remarkable technical progress, yet also left deep social, economic, and cultural scars in the regions they transformed. This work explores the historical and political forces that drove the construction of large hydraulic infrastructures, focusing on two telling examples: Lake Turano in Italy and the Tranco Reservoir in Spain.
Drawing on the voices of people from Colle di Tora and other villages in the valley—whose stories I personally gathered between 2020 and 2023 during fieldwork for my regional studies—and on accounts from Bujaraiza found in existing research, this study delves into the human consequences of these sweeping changes. Photographs and data accompany the narrative, helping to show how, beneath the calm surfaces of these artificial lakes, lie powerful tales of loss and collective memory.
