    A lo largo del siglo XVII se intensifica el comercio entre la América española y otros lugares del mundo, a veces tan remotos como Oriente. Ese intercambio de productos lleva aparejado el traslado de las denominaciones de los mismos desde unos lugares a otros (de ahí que usemos de forma metafórica la expresión «comercio de palabras»). De esa riqueza y diversidad material, así como de las palabras que la nombran, dan cuenta los documentos notariales ―inventarios post mortem, cartas de dote, tasaciones, memorias de mercadurías, etc.―que nos sirven de corpus para este estudio. En el enfoque léxico que se pretende dar a este trabajo, queremos detenernos en aquellos materiales textiles que presentan denominaciones geográficas exógenas, es decir, procedentes de ámbitos lingüísticos no hispánicos. Además queremos centrarnos en documentos fechados a lo largo del siglo XVII en Chile, una de las áreas más alejadas de los centros virreinales de la época, para comprobar qué tejidos y palabras llegaban desde lugares muy distantes del planeta también a esa región periférica.

    Trade between Spanish America and other parts of the world, at times even to the Far East, grew throughout the seventeenth century. These commercial dealings entailed the transfer of name designation of products from one place to another (hence, we have taken metaphorically the expression “trading in words”). From this wealth and diversity of material as well as the words used to describe them, appear in notary deeds —postmorteminventories, dowries, valuations, records of merchandise, etc.—and serve as the main corpus for this study. In the lexical approach we intend to give to this research, we intend to focus on those material fabrics that offer a foreing or unfamiliar designation, that is to say those that have arisen in linguistic contexts other than from Hispanic languages. Moreover, we have striven to focus on documentation dated throughout the seventeenth century in Chile, which was one of the areas furthest from the viceregal centres of the time in order to survey those fabrics and words coming from the remotest parts of the planet to this far removed region
