The books from Jacint Verdaguer’s private library, along with those belonging to Marià Aguiló and a few others from the “Institut d’Estudis Catalans”, provided the basis for the “Biblioteca de Catalunya” (‘Library of Catalonia’). They were acquired by the “Institut” in 1908 amidst fierce controversy in the press. From the start, the “Institut” wanted to create a “Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya”. Using forgotten or unknown documentation, this article aims to trace a picture of how the “Biblioteca” began when it was opened in 1914, and the connections with the “Institut” and the impetus it gave right up to the time of the Primo de Rivera dictatorship, under which the two institutions were the victims of the “decatalanizing” measures adopted by this regime. At the same time, we would also like to emphasize the importance of the acquisition of Verdaguer’s collec-tion of books, which prevented the dispersal of a particularly valuable literary treasure.
Els llibres de la biblioteca privada de Jacint Verdaguer van ser, amb els de Marià Aguiló i alguns altres que posseïa l’Institut d’Estudis Catalans, la base sobre la qual es va configurar la Biblioteca de Catalunya. Foren adquirits per l’Institut el 1908 en el marc d’una remorosa polèmica a la premsa. La institució acadèmica des del seu inici va tenir la voluntat de crear una Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya. Amb documentació oblidada o desconeguda, l’article es proposa de traçar un quadre de com foren els inicis de la Biblioteca, inaugurada el 1914, l’impuls i els lligams amb l’Institut, fins a l’època de la Dictadura de Primo de Rivera, en què ambdues entitats van sofrir les mesures descatalanitzadores d’aquest règim polític. Alhora, també posar en relleu la importància de l’adquisició de la llibreria verdagueriana, que així es va poder salvar de la dispersió i que constitueix un patrimoni literari d’especial valor.
