Ivanna Tsar
Based on language biographies collected after the beginning of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian War, this article discusses language attitudes as well as the self-reported language behavior of young Ukrainians during the war. The research shows how the language choices of youth are affected by socio-political events and can change in response to them. The study examines the socio-psychological reasons for young people's switching or non-switching from the Russian language to Ukrainian. Youth who had never switched to Ukrainian became even more principled about the language issue. The speakers who could switch languages depending on the situation ceased to do so (at least in communication with strangers or on the Internet). Those who communicated in Russian before the war either switched to Ukrainian, planned to switch, or consciously did not change their language behavior. The article also describes the differences between changes in youth language behavior after the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian War in 2014 and after the Russian full-scale invasion in 2022
