Cuatro querellas de la traducción organizan los intercambios entre lenguas europeas desde la modernidad. En cada uno de los cuatro mojones en que puede subdividirse esta historia, dos características esenciales prevalecen: una transformación cultural más allá del ámbito de la traducción y una transformación de la práctica traductora en sí. La querella bíblica, la querella de las bellas infieles, la querella romántica y la querella de la automatización escanden, así, el pasado de estas lenguas en sus intercambios mutuos. Pero la última querella, estrictamente hablando, no es parte de la historia sino de nuestro presente. El corte en el paradigma de la traducción que establecerá la traducción automática en los próximos decenios queda iluminado por las estaciones históricas y las crisis de la traducción que la han precedido.
Four translation quarrels have organized linguistic exchanges between European languages since the modern era. Each cluster dividing this history has two essential features: they entail a cultural transformation that goes well beyond translation itself, and they involve a transformation of the translation practice as such. The Biblical quarrel, the quarrel of the belles infidèles, the Romantic quarrel, and the automation quarrel segment the past of translation and linguistic exchanges. Strictly speaking, however, the last stage of this story belongs not to the past but to the present day. The previous three stages and crises in the history of modern translation illuminate the watershed in the translation paradigm introduced by automation today and in the next few decades.
