Este trabajo tiene como próposito presentar la biografía y las principales obras de Thomas Hardy, el último gran novelista victoriano. También repasa las adaptaciones cinematográficas y televisivas de sus novelas; en especial, Tess of the d’Urbervilles en las versiones de Roman Polanski (1979) y David Blair (2008). Se investigan asimismo las editoriales y los traductores que han trasladado su obra al español, catalán, vasco y gallego desde principios del siglo XX. El artículo incluye breves biografías de catorce traductores de ambos lados del Atlántico: Federico Climent, Emilio Martínez Amador, Cèsar August Jordana, Manuel Ortega y Gasset, Francisco Torres, Antonio Bonanno, Lluís Comes, Joaquim Monzó, Iñaki Iñurrieta, Xavier Pàmies, Catalina Martínez, Javier Franco, Roberto Frías y Claudia Casanova.
The purpose of this work is to present the biography and main works of Thomas Hardy, the last great Victorian novelist. It also reviews the film and television adaptations of his novels –particularly, Tess of the d'Urbervilles in Roman Polanski's (1979) and David Blair's (2008) versions. It also investigates the publishers and translators who have translated his work into Spanish, Catalan, Basque, and Galician since the early 20th century. The article includes brief biographies of fourteen translators from both sides of the Atlantic: Federico Climent, Emilio Martínez Amador, Cèsar August Jordana, Manuel Ortega y Gasset, Francisco Torres, Antonio Bonanno, Lluís Comes, Joaquim Monzó, Iñaki Iñurrieta, Xavier Pàmies, Catalina Martínez, Javier Franco, Roberto Frías, and Claudia Casanova.
