Diego Ruiz fou un escriptor i filòsof molt influent a Catalunya durant els primers anys del segle xx, fins que la seva figura va anar caient en l’oblit, paral·lelament a la marginació social que va patir. Entre la seva àmplia obra destaca el llibre Lull, maestro de definiciones (1906). L’objectiu del nostre article és situar, explicar i contextualitzar aquesta obra, tot incidint en el paper que llavors Ruiz donava a Llull en la cultura i la filosofia catalanes. A partir de la influència que Llull va exercir sobre Leibniz, Ruiz enllaça la importància que el filòsof mallorquí donava a la definició i a l’Art lul·liana com a mètode universal amb la idea d’Enciclopèdia o coneixement global pròpia dels pensadors dels segles xvii i xviii.
Diego Ruiz was an influential writer and philosopher in Catalonia throughout the first few years of the 20th century. But, eventually his position fell into decadence, and he became socially alienated. Of his many works, the book, Lull, maestro de definiciones (in English: Lull, master of definitions; 1906), stands out. The objective of the present article is to sit-uate, explain, and contextualize this book, underscoring the role Ruiz attributed to Llull in Catalan culture and philosophy at that time. Aside from the influence that Llull had on Leibniz, Ruiz relates the emphasis that the Majorcan philosopher placed on meaning and Lullian art as a universal method with the idea of encyclopedic or comprehensive knowledge popular among 17th and 18th century thinkers.
