Fins al Tractat dels Pirineus bona part de la cultura rossellonesa es confon amb la història general de la cultura catalana. No obstant això, a partir dels segles xvi-xviii se superposen al Rosselló, després del llatí i de l’alemany –aquesta vegada en un cas excepcional– tres llengües, tres maneres de veure el món en català, castellà i francès que marquen la producció editorial, la ideologia política i social als Comtats, les relacions de força i de poder. La majoria són obres d’escassa volada, llevat d’algun llibre tècnic. Predomina el llibre teològic, les peces de caient popular. Poc sabem encara d’aquesta història dels oficis manuals, de l’edició de llibres, fullets, goigs, pragmàtiques, del seu cost i de la seva difusió, vendes, exportació, de les primeres obres bilingües. La majoria de llibres s’editen a petites impremtes locals. Són encomanats, des de diverses perspectives, per particulars, per corporacions religioses, locals i estatals. El Rosselló, terra de frontera, és encara un laboratori d’idees per explorar
Until the Treaty of the Pyrenees a sizeable proportion of the Roussillon culture was blen-ded with the general history of Catalan culture. Nevertheless, from the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries onwards, three languages overlapped in Roussillon, three ways of seeing the world in Catalan, Spanish and French (after Latin and German); an exceptional situation. These languages affected print production, the political and social ideology in the Counties, and relationships of strength and power. Most were minor works with the exception of certain technical books. Theological books and popular works dominated production. We know little of the history of craftsmen, book publishing, broadsides, religious couplets («goigs»), edicts and their cost and circulation, sales, export, and the first bilingual works. Most books were printed in small local workshops. These works were ordered by individuals and by local and national religious bodies. A borderland province, Roussillon is still a laboratory of ideas to explore
