Con la llegada de las primeras noticias sobre la “solución final” de la Alemania hitlerista, los exiliados republicanos de origen judío presentes en la América hispanohablante empezaron a debatir sobre el tema y, sobre todo, a cuestionar su papel de intelectuales y reflexionar sobre su propia identidad. Nuestro propósito es el de ofrecer una nueva aproximación a la recepción de la Shoah en la intelectualidad republicana y, dentro de este “grupo”, en la participación de los exiliados con ascendencia judía en el debate sobre qué acciones emprender para acoger a los refugiados judíos europeos y cómo hablar del Holocausto. Para hacer esto, indagaremos la relación entre dos exponentes de la inteligencia literaria en el exilio, Rosa Chacel y Máximo José Kahn, y el papel que ambos jugaron ante el Holocausto, a partir de su amistad, que remontaba a antes de la guerra y que siguió en la diáspora; después de presentar un pequeño cuadro histórico-literario de la “cuestión judía” española, nos centraremos en el estudio del epistolario entre Chacel y Kahn y en su producción literaria relacionada con el tema.
With the arrival of the first news about the “final solution” of Nazi Germany, Republican exiles of Jewish origin present in Spanish-speaking America began to debate the issue and, above all, to question their role as intellectuals and to reflect on their own identity. Our purpose is to offer a new approach to the reception of the Shoah in the Republican intellectual community and, within this “group”, to the participation of exiles of Jewish descent in the debate on what actions to take to welcome European Jewish refugees and how to talk about the Holocaust. To do this, we will investigate the relationship between two exponents of literary intelligence in exile, Rosa Chacel and Máximo José Kahn, and the role that both played in the face of the Holocaust, starting from their friendship, which went back to before the war and continued in the diaspora; after presenting a brief historical-literary overview of the Spanish “Jewish question”, we will focus on the study of the correspondence between Chacel and Kahn and their literary production related to the topic.
