This study provides various archival documents to identify the ‘Costana’ who appears in the Cancionero General (1511) as the author of nine poetic compositions. The figure is probably the comendador Francisco de la Costana, from Burgos, and a member of the court of Queen Isabella of Castile. He was married to Isabel Serrano, and this research has likely identified his descendants, or at least some of them. Futhermore, this study identifies other members of his family and establishes their converso origins. A descendant of wealthy merchants from Burgos, he assumed responsibility of the city’s Jewish cemetery.
