How to educate for democracy is a contingent and controversial issue. Multiple perspectives dispute the answer to this problem (Sant, 2019; Apple et al., 2022). In the Chilean context, various studies have investigated the perspectives held by different ac-tors in the educational system without clear results about which one predominates (Almeyda & Jiménez, 2020; Salinas et al., 2016). School texts have not been investigated in this area des-pite their great relevance, considering that they are distributed to more than ninety percent of the country’s schools (Oteíza, 2023). The present study aims to interpret how Conceptual Metaphors contribute to the discursive construction of the notion of demo-cracy in official Civic Education school texts distributed between 2020 and 2023, with particular attention to maximalist and mi-nimalist perspectives (Kerr, 2002). For this purpose, a critical analysis of conceptual metaphors was carried out based on the theory of extended conceptual metaphors (Kövecses, 2020). The main findings evidence that the two main conceptual metaphors identified, namely, DEMOCRACY IS A BUILDING and DEMO-CRACY IS A PERSON, mainly promote a maximalist perspec-tive on democracy and education. These findings can increase knowledge on education and citizenship in the Chilean context. Also, they can contribute to the informed use of school texts by various actors in the educational system.
