This work investigates the dynamic development of the L2 motivational self system (L2MSS) and its correlation with learning behavior. Based on the complex dynamic systems theory, we carry out a four-year longitudinal study of a class of Chinese undergraduate students majored in Spanish. Survey and interview materials are used to record dynamic data of L2MSS, study behaviors and influence factors. The results indicate that the L2MSS presents a complex and non-linear development and its variability is shown in the individual and group aspects. Individual variability increases in the order of the ideal L2 self, the ought-to L2 self and L2 learning experience, while the group variability increases according to the order of the ideal L2 self, L2 learning experiences and the ought-to L2 self. Likewise, L2MSS also presents a relatively stable development, the degree of stability decreases in the first order mentioned above. Influence factors in the development include career planning, testing and teaching content. Furthermore, L2 learning experiences are more likely to stimulate study behavior, because they could immediately activate the working self.
