In this article, we study Imágenes de la muerte (2022) by Ramón Díaz Eterovic, a novel set in Santiago during the social outbreak For this, we use concepts belonging to the symbolism of the fire (Bachelard, Chevalier, and Gheerbrant), sociological, literary and philosophical reflections on the riot, the construction of the urban imaginary in relation to capitalism (Harvey), and histo-riographical interpretations of Chile in recent decades (Salazar, Pinto, and Subercaseaux). Likewise, we carry out a comparati-ve analysis between Imágenes de la Muerte and other novels of the Heredia saga. We support the idea that the representation of Santiago undergoes an alteration after the riot, both because of the numerous episodes of violence and the irruption of drug trafficking. Furthermore, we propose a change in the detective’s attitude towards the future of Chile, since he experiences the illusion that a political and economic transformation is possible. With this, we hope to develop an original reading of a novel that constitutes a landmark in the national historical fiction plotted by the Chilean writer in the last decades
