This study compares the frequency of the use of definite articles (el/la) with anthroponyms and their bare form in oral samples from Mexico City, Mexicali, and Monterrey at three levels of analysis: dystopic, diastratic, and diafasic. The aim is to identify the motivations behind the use of definite articles before anthro-ponyms at the diatonic, diastratic, and diafasic levels in the three mentioned dialects. This was done by analyzing instances of bare anthroponyms and those with definite articles in spontaneous conversations (Ameresco) and semi-directed interviews (PRE-SEEA) from Mexico City, Mexicali, and Monterrey. The article suggests that the usage of this structure in Mexico responds to dystopic, diastratic, and diafasic factors: 1) the Mexicali sample shows a higher usage compared to the other two, 2) there is a higher presence of el/la + anthroponym in spontaneous conver-sations than in semi-directed interviews (Mexico City and Mon-terrey), and 3) the use of article + anthroponym is stratified in the Mexicali corpus.
