The article analyzes the novel Del andrógino (1622) by Francisco Lugo y Dávila to highlight the early presence of queer themes, transvestism and gender issues in literature. Two plot threads are also explored: the undoing of the will of the female figure in the character Laura and the gender transformation of the male character Ricardo. It is suggested that transvestism not only defies generic canons, but also functions as a narrative device to distance itself from its Cervantes antecedent El celoso extremeño. Although some analyses have established connections with gender issues, it is hypothesized that the use of transvestism seeks more to rework the text than to intervene directly in identity issues. Finally, the article contextualizes these themes in seventeenth-century society and highlights generic ambiguity as both an aesthetic and a discursive phenomenon.
