he teaching and learning of the Simple Past tense (canté) and the Imperfect tense (cantaba) tenses in the university context of Chinse-speaking learners of Spanish as a Foreign Language has traditionally been approached from an aspectual perspective focused on the perfective-imperfective opposition, relegating their pragmatic-discursive values to the background. The fact that their presence in both teaching practice and materials remains limited, despite the fact that the Plan Curricular del Instituto Cervantes (2006) recommends their introduction from B1 level onwards, gives rise to the hypothesis that learners will not recognize most of these canté and cantaba values. In order to test this hypothesis empirically, a descriptive-comparative study was conducted based on data obtained from a questionnaire administered in Classin. The results of this preliminary study confirm the hypothesis and highlight the need to explicitly incorporate these values into the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language to Chinese speakers.
