In medieval literature, adherence to tradition was inherent to the very act of creation, to the extent that originality was based on the ability to manage this tradition. In the Galician-Portuguese lyric poetry, relationships between texts are observed that fit the restricted concept of intertextuality, in which Genette includes cases of allusion and citation. In particular, the reuse of the refrain of one cantiga in another was considered, within the Galician-Portuguese tradition itself, as one of the manifestations of the seguir technique in the Arte de Trovar. This contribution approaches both practices to show that the evocation of other authors and texts is far from passive and was carried out in a shared aristocratic setting as part of a literary game. Furthermore, the recovery of a text’s refrain in another carries an associated change of register that is key to establishing the direction of the intertextual relationship.
