This study focuses on so-called expletive negation in comparative constructions of inequality in Old Aragonese, specifically the Grant Crónica de Espanya (1385). Of the 316 recorded instances, 173 include negation and 143 do not, which indicates a significant alternation. The study shows that this variation stems from internal linguistic factors that are either syntactic or semantic/pragmatic: when the second term of the comparison is a clause with a personal verb form, negation is the norm, whereas in non-clausal contexts, negation serves to exclude or separate the elements being compared; if this function is realized through other mechanisms, negation does not appear. Thus, the negation is not truly expletive in these contexts. Finally, the analysis shows that the third aspect considered – the complex compilation of the chronicle – does not explain the alternation.
