This article is based on the hypothesis that, in literary narratives, the singular, concrete world of objects fulfills a primary function in relation to visual imagination, a fundamental mode of reader engagement. While in the visual arts the spectator “sees” that world, the reader of a novel only “sees” with their mental eye what is named (Chatman, 1980). Since objects are linked not only to reality but also to the concept of objectivity or truth, they ensure a connection to reality and produce an automatic sense of attachment.
The narrator’s choice of objects makes the reader “see” and determines also the “way” in which they see it. This article presents a Poetics of Objects based on the functions they fulfill in plot, space, time, and narrative meaning.
