Daily experience tells us that after yesterday comes today, and after today, tomorrow. Standing in the present, we would say it is never yesterday or tomorrow. However, there’s a moment in the day when it’s no longer today but not yet tomorrow. This is the time of insomnia. A strange time. The awakening of the insomniac differs from the morning awakening precisely in the will to fulfill the mandate of nightly rest; it is an act that is commonly resisted.
While the morning involves seeking a reconnection with the world of concepts and closed discourses, the wakefulness of insomnia struggles to return to the mists of sleep, to escape the normalization of meaning. This article reviews various perspectives on insomnia through the lens of literature and semiotics, followed by an analysis of media offerings and how they integrate into the slow night hours, abstracted from daytime forms of time regulation.
