This article reviews the history of Icelandic-Spanish bilingual lexicography, dividing it into three stages. The first brings together early evidence of Spanish words associated with Icelandic, found on the versos of maps (Ortelio, 1602) and in the Basque-Icelandic glossaries of the seventeenth century. The second corresponds to a period of growing interest in learning Spanish, during which small-scale but widely used works were published (Hangartner & Herrera Ólafsson, 1978; Sigurmundsson, 1973). The third examines the dictionaries by Tulinius et al. (2007, 2011), characterized by a larger number of headwords and a more systematic lexicographic approach. The article also presents the LEXÍA project (Úlfarsdóttir & Davíðsdóttir, 2021), on the basis of which the existence of a “fourth stage” may be proposed.
